More Than a Market: Why Mulgrave's Best Kept Secret Deserves the Spotlight
Fresh produce, local stories and community spirit have made the Mulgrave Farmers Market a Sunday institution for more than 15 years.
For many residents, Sunday mornings are synonymous with sport, errands or a quick trip to the supermarket. Yet tucked away on Gladeswood Drive is one of Monash’s most enduring community success stories. Recently, the Monash Herald team visited the Mulgrave Farmers Market and came away with a simple conclusion: this local institution deserves far greater recognition across our municipality.

Operating since 2009, the Mulgrave Farmers Market has quietly become a cornerstone of the local community, bringing together farmers, growers, bakers and artisan producers from across Victoria each and every week. What began as a modest community initiative has evolved into one of Melbourne’s most established weekly farmers markets, attracting visitors from across the south east while maintaining its distinctly local character.
Located within the grounds of Mulgrave Primary School, the market offers a refreshing alternative to the increasingly impersonal nature of modern retail. Rather than navigating supermarket aisles, visitors have the opportunity to meet the people behind the products, learn where their food comes from and purchase directly from those who grow, produce and create it. The range on offer is impressive. Fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables sit alongside locally baked breads, specialty foods, gourmet products and artisan goods. Yet beyond the produce itself, it is the atmosphere that leaves the strongest impression. There is a genuine sense of community that is becoming increasingly rare in contemporary shopping environments.

Markets such as this play an important role in supporting local economies. Every purchase made at a stall helps sustain small businesses, family run farms and independent producers who face growing pressures from large scale retail competition. In an era where economic challenges continue to impact households and businesses alike, supporting local enterprise has never been more important.
Shopping locally is about more than simply buying produce. It is about investing in the resilience of our community, supporting jobs, strengthening local supply chains and ensuring that small businesses continue to have a place within Monash’s economic landscape. The Mulgrave Farmers Market demonstrates that residents are increasingly seeking experiences that combine quality, authenticity and community connection. It is a place where neighbours catch up over coffee, families spend a morning together and producers share the stories behind their products.
For a city that prides itself on its strong sense of community, the market serves as a reminder that some of Monash’s greatest assets are often found in our own backyard.
